Clearwater boasts twenty-eight miles of beautiful, white, sandy beaches on the Gulf of México. Add to it an abundance of mild weather and several entertainment activities, and you soon realize why so many residents, businesses, and visitors continue to flock to Clearwater each year.
Clearwater sits on the highest coastal bluff in Florida and serves as the county seat for Pinellas County, which is located due west of Tampa. Named for its abundant fresh springs along the shore, the area was first settled by colonists in the mid-1830s. By the 1890s it had gained a reputation as a resort community which continues to this day.
In 2000, the U.S. Census noted that there were 108,787 people living in Clearwater. The racial makeup of the city was 83.85% White, 9.79% African American, 8097% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 0.32% Native American, 1.64% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.48% from other races, and 1.85% from two or more races.
The median income for a household in Clearwater was $36,494, and the median income for a family was $46,228. The per capita income for the city was $22,786.
